The enhanced TRANSFLO Mobile app is free to drivers who send paperwork electronically to participating carriers or for carriers who send paperwork to participating brokers. TRANSFLO Mobile speeds document delivery allowing drivers and carriers to capture and send high-quality images of proof of delivery documents, logs, invoices and receipts using an iPhone or Android smart phone.

The latest version improves the general optimization of document images, resulting in crisper and higher quality images than ever before. To ensure that images are legible, this new version of TRANSFLO Mobile automatically provides an additional electronic quality check – right on the smart phone. The readability of each image is evaluated, scored and validated before submission. If the user captures an image that has questionable focus or is not legible, the app prompts the user to review or re-take the image.

TRANSFLO Mobile has a special algorithm for enhancing images that are traditionally difficult to read such as multi-page colored documents or carbon copy forms. It also allows users to lighten and darken the document image which is especially important for colored documents that have varying hues and shades of text.

Other enhancements that improve the quality of images before they are sent to carriers or brokers include a camera default setting that automatically turns the flash to the “On” position.

When the system is widely deployed, a driver will be able to check on parking availability along an interstate corridor in real time using his own or a company-supplied wireless communication device, Murray said.

One program which is nearly operational, Murray noted, was launched with the help of the Minnesota Department of Transportation and the University of Minnesota. It currently involves two public rest areas on I-94 in that state, and will expand to private truck stops within a few months. With several Wisconsin rest stops coming online later this year, the hope, Murray said, is that the system will ultimately extend the length of I-94, which runs 1,585 miles from Detroit, Mich., to Billings, Mont.

“Of course, the trucking industry would like to see it go national,” Murray said.

Murray outlined the parking initiative as part of his update on ATRI’s 2013 research activities for the customers of Pegasus TransTech, the leader in paperless transportation technology. Pegasus TransTech features prominent trucking personalities as keynote speakers at its annual user conferences. Last year’s speaker was American Trucking Associations’ President and CEO, Gov. Bill Graves.

Murray told the group that ATRI is guided by its Research Advisory Committee, which defines what they believe to be the most important issues confronting the trucking industry.

“This is the first time in a while that the economy has not been the committee’s top issue,” Murray said.

The top concern now is CSA (Compliance, Safety, Accountability), the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s comprehensive safety reporting and evaluation program. CSA is followed on the list by hours-of-service issues currently being argued in the courts. The economy is now in third place on the committee’s list followed by the driver shortage, Murray said.

While truck parking is not at the top of the list, it is a growing problem for drivers who are required by law to rest for certain periods of time. Yet states have been closing public rest areas to save money, Murray explained. Meanwhile, time in some rest areas is limited and enforced by police, who also ticket drivers pulled over on entrance and exit ramps when no other space is available to them.

The problem will only get worse, Murray pointed out, as truck traffic increases — as it is currently projected to do.

The as yet unnamed parking system being tested begins with cameras mounted at parking areas that send pictures of parking slots to a central server. The computer can tell whether or not a parking space is occupied and keeps a running, real-time inventory. In the future it is hoped this information will be available to drivers on the road as well as to dispatchers, who might use it to stage trailer exchanges, for example.

Houg launched the company with her father in 1987, and while both her father and brother are part of the business, she has been the company’s owner since 1991, she explained.

TRANSFLO Express is used by Houg’s 100-truck fleet that includes 60 company owned units. The balance of the fleet is owner-operators and contractors who run under their own authority.

The rate of new customer signups is up 20% over those in 2011 and set a record for the sixth year in a row, the company reported. Fleets signing up for TRANSFLO scanning solutions included Con-way Truckload, AAA Cooper, Fikes Truck Line among hundreds of others. Tampa, Fla. – November 27, 2012 – Searcy Trucking of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, has implemented TRANSFLO Express truck stop scanning from Pegasus TransTech. Searcy is a flatbed carrier specializing in moves between the U.S. and central Canada.

“We handle anything that will go on a flatbed, step deck, or drop axle,” said General Manager Darrel Mozil.

Much of Searcy’s business is in oil field and agricultural freight, Mozil explained. Southbound moves usually originate in the Winnipeg region. Northbound loads are generally destined to the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan. All involve customs at the U.S./Canadian border.

For U.S. manifests, information must be submitted through U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) Automated Commercial Environment (ACE) at least 1 hour, or 30 minutes if the shipment qualifies for the Free and Secure Trade (FAST) program, prior to the truck arriving at the border.

Similarly, Canada is phasing in new requirements that will be fully enforced in May of 2013. For a Canadian truck eManifest, the information must be transmitted through Canada Border Services Agency’s (CBSA) ACI Highway system at least one hour prior to arriving at a Canadian border crossing.

“We signed up for TRANSFLO Express because it’s cost efficient and because we were faxing so much paperwork.” Mozil explained.

Toll Global Forwarding is a business unit of Toll Group, an $8 billion provider of integrated logistics based in Melbourne, Australia, with a network of more than 1,200 sites in 55 countries. According to Director of Transportation Michael Divirgilio, Toll Global Forwarding in Carteret implemented TRANSFLO Express early this year in order to streamline its billing and payroll processes. “We also wanted to reduce or eliminate the cost of overnighting documents from the road,” he said.

Using TRANSFLO Express, drivers can simply hand their delivery documents to a trained fuel desk attendant at more than 850 truck stops throughout the United States and Canada. In seconds, these documents are delivered electronically to headquarters for immediate billing and payroll processing. The driver retains the originals.

TRANSFLO Express has worked out well. “The drivers love it,” Divirgilio explained. “They get paid more quickly now.”

Things move more quickly on the office side as well, he said.

“It’s great for payroll. They receive documents already scanned. They get everything they need at once,” Divirgilio said. Cash flow has improved as a result.

“Oh yes,” Divirgilio said, “quick receipt of documents makes a difference.”
