Flatbed carrier speeds driver settlements

Tampa, Fla. – May 4 - PI&I Motor Express has implemented TRANSFLO Express^® truck stop scanning from Pegasus TransTech. The 700-truck fleet sees benefits both in driver satisfaction and quicker billing.

PI&I is a flatbed hauler based in Masury, Ohio, just northeast of Youngstown, and serves metal industries among other shippers with a 50-50 mix of company drivers and owner operators. PI&I operates throughout the central portion of the U.S. from eight terminals in six states.

Driver Manager Jeff Jenkins expects TRANSFLO Express will be especially beneficial for drivers who operate from its southernmost terminals. Drivers in that part of the country often spend more time on the road than drivers in the more densely populated North, he explained.

 “The guys who don't get to a terminal on a regular basis will still be able to send in their paperwork,” Jenkins said.

 Drivers who wait until they reach a terminal to scan their paperwork can find their pay delayed to the same extent, Jenkins explained. “Now their pay should reflect what they did that week,” he said.

TRANSFLO Express will help owner operators get paid in a timely manner as well as in another respect. Owner operators use PI&I fuel cards, and fuel costs are deducted from their trip pay. PI&I has to pay for fuel quickly and so deducts fuel costs from the very next settlement with an owner operator. 

“If a guy fuels today but his paperwork doesn't get turned in until next week,that fuel cost will be taken out of the next check. That means the load he hauled with that fuel won't be paid until the following week,” Jenkins said.

TRANSFLO Express can help keep fuel charges aligned with regular settlement checks.  The company sees direct benefits as well.

 “Of course, it improves our efficiency to be able to bill our loads sooner, which obviously affects accounts receivable,” Jenkins said.
